The project Consumir Local (“buy local”) encompasses a set of conscious initiatives about food consumption, where communication design provide the driving force for public and social relationships. Consumir Local is ideated by Alexandra Santos during her the Master in Communication Design for tourism and culture at the Universidade do Algarve. The project took the shape of a social design project, and it consists of a set of actions to raise awareness on consumer options, local consumption.
Created in the area of the Municipal Market of Silves, Portugal, Mercado Fora d’Horas (“market in a different schedule”), is one of those actions: it consist of a gastronomic event about local culture. This event has a strong creative composition and blends traditional values with contemporary assets, in an action to raise awareness about the traditions of the municipal markets in the Mediterranean context. The markets are places of tradition, for people and their food. In this sense it is intended that the public (Re) discover the Municipal Market of Silves. One of the main problem of the market is the schedule, inadequate to actual labor hours (8am-1pm) and the strong competition created by the big corporations. It will be a evening, when the market will show their specific characteristics, educational and playful program about gastronomy and traditions.
